MORTUARY – Nothingless Than Nothingness

Death / Thrash attack from Mortuary (France) couldn’t be more on top than this. Founded in 1989 in Nancy, France, Mortuary has been apart of the first wave of French Death metal bands alongside Loudblast, Massacra, and Agressor.

Their fifth album, Nothingless Than Nothingness is a perfect blend of Death and Thrash metal recalling the template of old school Death metal. With fast tempos and incessant riffings, their music has some elements of hardcore, punk, and even grindcore. As mature as the band is, their music sounds contemporary and very technically in touch with its desire to violently assault the listener’s ears. We are at the edge of Brutal Death metal and the fact that their music is at this place is because of the zero use of melodic elements of their music.

The guitar solo of ‘’Above’’ is beyond grand and makes it for one of the most noticeable songs of the release. Patrick Germonville’s screams are not the usual Death metal growls but still not far from the Thrash metal intense screams of borderline clean singing of the genre.

As a whole the bandfits well together and no one seems to be shadowing any other member of the band. The album is well paced and the ever lasting energy that comes out of it is palpable and makes it one of the interesting Death metal releases of 2016 so far.
